The rays of the numerous candles (for there were many) now fell within a niche of the room which had hitherto been thrown into deep shade by one of the bed-posts. I thus saw in vivid light a picture all unnoticed before. It was the portrait of a young girl just ripening into womanhood.
I raggi delle numerose candele (poiché ve n'erano molte) penetrarono in una nicchia che una delle colonne del letto aveva fino a quel momento tenuto nell'ombra più fitta. Scorsi così nella vivida luce un quadro che prima m'era affatto sfuggito. Era il ritratto di una fanciulla, tenera eppur rigogliosa, quasi donna ormai.
