L'Aquila Bobbin Lace

Italiano

Back to History

L’Aquila presents a form of bobbin lace almost unknown, but very old.

The origins of this kind of lace, whose main feature (continuous lace) is almost unique in Italy, are uncertain. We can only say that in L'Aquila there was a good production of "passamani", from which bobbin lace comes, that there were many commercial contacts with people coming from Lombardia region, but  it is certain that since the end of XVth century we can testify the presence of a good production of bobbin lace.

After the publication and spread, in XVth century, of many lace books, L'Aquila lace got on improving and becoming more and more precious, saving at the same time the fidelity to its main characters: the working technique in only one piece, with a great number of bobbins, and the brightness of its thread.

In XIXth century L'Aquila Lace knew a very succesful season: the request was great and the production grew, substained not only by convents and noble women, but also by new created institutes and schools that gave a lot of women an opportuinity of gain. It was also an age of recognitions obtained in a number of important exhibits; in the same time, a new technique, called "punto nuovo" (new point) was introduced.

At the end of the century, like in other parts of Italy, L'Aquila lace knew a slow, but irresistible age od decadence.

In XXth century, since the Eighties, a revival of interest gave life to a series of exhibits and, later on, new schools and associations were born to promote and teach again this traditional lace technique.
