Accademia Merletti De Amicis
Salita Camuzio, Cantù (CO)
director: Flavia Tagliabue Cattaneo

Accademia Merletti was born nel 1995 in "De Amicis" College, Cantù. Its goal was to study and teach traditional bobbin lace and spread this knowledge again. The school had a great success and nowadays 200 pupils on average attend lace lessons.

Accademia Merletti promote the spread of a lace culture also in collaboration with other institutions; in particular, we can remember the series of stages and the annual lace show organised in cooperation with AMI (the Association of Italian lacemakers) at the Silk Museum of Como, the creation of a project section in the school, the great number of exhibits organised as well as the participation in important lace events like Cantù Biennial and Sansepolcro Biennial, the publication of books and booklets.

The last book from Accademia Merletti, the first of an encyclopedia devoted to traditional Cantù Lace, concerns the so called Venetia Lace (Rococò). It explains this main italian lace technique starting from old pieces from Museum Poldi Pezzoli reconstructed and presented in a modern way. International code-color diagram and a very good historical preface are included. Some video lessons are also available.
