Using Active Control Points

Use the Active control point option to determine whether mask control points are active or inactive on a frame or range of frames.

When a mask control point is active, the curve of the spline intersects the active control point. When the control point is inactive, the mask spline ignores the control point.

When performing masking or rotoscoping, it is often necessary to add control points to a mask at various frames to accommodate changes in the shape of the subject being masked. Also, control points added to a mask at certain frames may no longer be necessary at other points in the clip. You can affect the shape of an animated mask at specific frames by using active and inactive control points.

To make a control point inactive:
  1. In the mask (or Paint) operator, select an existing mask object.
  2. Note: Mask control points, including control points added to an existing mask, are active by default.

  3. Show the Toolbar (F2) and select the Control Points option, or press Tab to switch options.
  4. Click on a mask control point.
  5. Note: To avoid inadvertently moving the control point, you can drag a selection box around it to select the point.

You can now access the Active button.

  6. Disable the Active button to make the control point inactive.
  7. Note: To toggle a control point between active and inactive, you can also press Alt or Option and click on the control point.
