Creating a Magic Wand Selection

Use the Magic Wand to select portions of your image based on the hue and brightness similarities of adjacent pixels. This tool is useful for quickly selecting an element of your image that has a consistent color (without having to trace the image).

combustion determines how similar adjacent pixels are using the Tolerance value in the Magic Wand options.

To create a selection with the Magic Wand:
  1. On the Toolbar, click the Magic Wand tool .
  2. The Magic Wand options appear at the bottom of the Toolbar.

  3. Use the Tolerance field to specify the range of color that the Magic Wand selects. The higher the number, the greater the range of color that is selected. Set Tolerance to 0% to select only an area of contiguous color that is the exact same color as the one you click with the Magic Wand. As you increase the tolerance, the area selected expands to include a greater range of color.
  4. In the active viewport, click in the area of color.
  5. The selected area is outlined with a marquee.

Warning: Because the Magic Wand makes selections based on pixel color, if the color of the selected pixel changes on the following frames, the selection changes. If the color of the pixels changes over time, you have to animate or track the position of the Magic Wand to follow the color area.
