Integrating
the theories of Invitational Rhetoric and Transformative Mediation, this
workshop will explore characteristics of positive communication in mediation.
Viewing mediation as an invitation to engage in relationship-building forms
of communication in conflict situations, we will address ways in which mediators
and disputants can work together to achieve a safe environment, collaborative
communication, power management, process management, and a safe environment.
Participants will share practices from their own experiences that can achieve
the goals of invitational mediation with opportunities for practice. Special
emphasis will be placed on ways in which disputants can transcend destructive
patterns of conflict and communicate in ways that achieve positive outcomes
for all participants. Emphasis will be placed on principled practice and
pragmatic skill building.
