How do we get to know others and our selves? Attribution theory focus such questions by modeling how social behavior are interpreted, and the consequences of those interpretations. An other persons intentions, or personal dispositions, for instance, are not given facts but attributed to the person as a consequence of perception of his behavior. In normal social life there seems to be a set of biases in peoples attributions, and such biases can be causal in conflict escalation. By combining attribution theory and theories of social interaction, a contextual perspective on conflicts will be outlined. From this analysis a set of practical tools for more effective mediation will be presented. Although the workshop have relevance for all kind of conflict analysis, most of the examples will be from intimate conflicts and divorce mediation. |
