Open Road 2001
Nov 7 (Trento, Italy)

Trento is a little city situated in Northern Italy at the base of the Alps in the heart of the Dolomite Mountains. If you want to find it on a map locate "fair Verona" and look a little to the north. A beautiful place to wake up to after a thirty-hour bus ride. It is called the "Painted City" because of the numerous frescoes that adorn the fronts of the palazzos that line the city streets. The city was founded in 25AD and has seen its fair share of battles and occupiers. Its location in the Adige river valley (one of the branches of the ancient amber route) and near the entrance to the Brenner Pass has made it a strategically important town. Everyone from Tiberius to Henry II of the Holy Roman Empire to the Catholic Church to Napoleon and Hitler has coveted it. Surprisingly, despite the many battles that must have raged through these streets, a lot of the historical town has survived. The town saw a building boom during the 16th century (which is when most of the frescoed houses were built) and as a result there are spectacular examples of Renaissance architecture throughout the town, but mixed in with this are many examples of medieval and baroque buildings as well as some Roman ruins. It is a beautiful place. It is pure Italian and even makes a thirty-hour bus trip seem worthwhile. A great place to begin the Italian leg of the tour.
The venue tonight was a beautiful early 19th century theater in the heart of the town. This "modern" facility is built upon the ruins of an old Roman theater, the walls of which happen to jut into the dressing rooms below. It was an odd show tonight. The thirty-hour drive and the day of sightseeing didn't help our stamina. We were all a little bit unfocused and lacking in energy. Let's just say it wasn't our greatest gig of the tour, but it's great to be back among the Italians, their history and their culture.
