......The official birth date of Modern Ostia was 25 November 1884, a park in Ostia is dedicated to the day when a
large group (500 men and 50 women) of farm labourers of the "Associazione Generale Operai Braccianti"
(General Association of Agricultural Workers)
arrived from Ravenna.
They were responsible for the drainage of the territories around Ostia which had become marshland
following the great flood of 1557.
......Life and working conditions were very hard and many workers died after contracting Malaria.
......Thanks also to the great enthusiasm of personalities like Federico Bazzini (who opened the first "restaurant"),
and Armando Armuzzi (a square in Ostia is dedicated to him), the drainage duly proceeded, being successfully
completed after more than twenty years of works.
