Reading : Carnival in Acireale
Carnival
in Acireale has a tree hundred year history, in fact it dates back to the
1600’s , when the city was set free from the vassals and became the
crown property of the Aragonese.
In 1700 , Carnival offered , popular events unexpected poetry competitions
in the local dialect.
In
the 19th century Carnival was rich in parades, costumed teams that provided
enjoyment to both the population and nobility as well.
Today
Acireale Carnival is the major tourist and entertainment event generally celebrated
on the second half of February or in the first days of March, lasting about
ten days.
The
town has multicoloured lighting and the streets are crowded with people admiring
allegorical - grotesque flowered floats and fancy dressed groups. The floats
, made up of coloured “cartapesta” , parade along the streets
of the town and on the last day of Carnival the best float is awarded a cash
prize.
There
are a lot of tourists coming from other towns. Some wear fancy dresses , masks
and funny hats. People go through the streets shouting, throwing confetti
and streamers, blowing trumpets, dancing and playing tricks.
