Laconi (555 m)

History. The human presence dates back to the Ancient Neolitic 6000/4500 years b.C. We can notice it inside the numerous caves present in the territory. Settlements of villages are dated back to 3700/2400 b.C. in Cirquittus, Monte Feuredda, and Sarcidanu. It is here that the divinity and heros worship of the time have had its splendour, raising menhirs, finely laboured monoliths, many founds are kept in the Archaeological Museum of Laconi. From the Copper Age and from the beginning of the Bronze Age 2400/1800 b.C. domus de janas e megalitic tombs, adoration and burial places, from here the expansion of the nuragic civilization that also in Laconi is present with numerous monuments.

Laconi enter in the history about the XI century d. C., when, for the first time, it appears in the writings of the epoch, accompanied with names of Byzantine origin of judges who bear the gentilitial title de Lacon (Orocco, Orzoco, the judge of Cagliari Costantino, that appears in a letter of S. Gregorio VII). It seems that the word indicates, more that a inhabited agglomerate, the place of origin of such persons: in fact, the word Laconi could derive from the Greek word lahane, border, that indicated the territory between the Barbagia and the Southern part of the Sardinia. But the etymology is still uncertain: it is possible that it derives from the indigenous term laccu, that had the meaning of basin, manger. It is more credible that "Laconi" referred to the local term "lacana" and that it indicated a border land, a village to the limit between the Barbagia and the Mandrolisai.

The name that certainly indicates the village appears in a clear way from the Papal bull of Onorio III (11th June 1224), directed to Trogotorio Arborensi Archiepiscopo, that confirmed him the rights and the privileges over the churches of Laconi. In 1357 Laconi was recorded among the villages subjected to the ecclesiastic tithes. For what concerns the historical-political events, it results for the first time in a document of the 24th January 1388, when it sent its delegates to the firm for la peace Aragonese-Arborense. In 1421 Alfonso II d’Aragona, with Genoni and Nuragus, awarded it to Giovanni de Sena. In 1479 it was awarded to Enrico Enriquez, and with him the first marquisate of the Castelvė rose. Till 1668 Agostino Castelvė was the more famous, who, after an impetuous life, was killed in the night between the 20th and 21st of June. His widow, Francesca Zatrillas di Siete Fuentes, married the noble Silvestro Ajmerich. Their son, Gabriele Antonio gave birth to the present branch of the marquises of Laconi. This was a great historical event, above all for the future of the village of the time till to the delivery of the Sardinia to the viceroy of Savoy Baron of Saint Remy (1720), year of the abolition of the feudalism.
