Back to Lace in Italy | ||||||||
Her family comes from two Piemonte valleys (Valle Susa and Valle Sesia) where bobbin lace and puncetto lace (a form of needle lace) were traditional works and are still practised. Her grandmothers were not lacemakers, but were very fond of embroidery and let her know these feminine arts since she was a child. She started working bobbin lace in 1990, first attending some lessons, then going on by herself, as well as contacting reputed lace teachers abroad, developing her knowedge both in techniques and in history of lace. In fact, she's not only interested in making lace, but also in researching its origins, finding evidence of its evolution (people's movements, changes in design, etc.). That's the reason why she defines hersel as a lace technician more than a lace maker. Her aim is to make people know the history of laces of small communities, very often unknown but fascinating, a heritage to be saved before it's too late.
