To those of you who find personal info interesting. I taught myself to play the guitar at 13. (Thank you mom for the first one!) I’ve been singing as long as my mother has been bribing me to. I was thrown into a juvenile detention center when I was 14 for breaking into my junior high school 11 times

...this really pissed me off !!
Once I finished high school I started touring with Ryan Peake and my brother in a cover band as a lead guitar player. We had a different singer at that time that taught me everything I now know about fronting a band.
After a year we found ourselves tired of playing other peoples music and went our separate ways. In 96’ I wrote 10 songs and convinced Peake, my brother Mike, and my cousin Brandon to record them with me in Vancouver.
NICKELBACK is born.
I signed a record deal when I was 24 for the master recordings of our second effort, The State. I’ve been touring ever since.

Il 26enne Connolly è conscio del ruolo che la fortuna ha
svolto nel successo della band (Theory of a deadman). Tornando al 1999, quando i
Nickelback stavano diventando una delle più popolari band del Canada, gli capitò
di esibirsi in una festa nella nativa Vancouver a cui partecipava anche Kroeger.
Un amico comune fece incontrare i due. "Chad avrà sentito miliardi di
volte parole come 'Sai, il mio amico suona in una band'" dice Connolly.
"Sono sicuro che ha guardato in alto dicendo 'Sì, certo'. Ma ha ascoltato
il nostro demo e ha detto che gli era davvero piaciuto".
Dopo il successo dei Default - un'altra band di Vancouver scoperta da Kroeger-
Kroeger ed il suo procuratore Jonathan Simkin fondarono un'etichetta, la 604
Records. Il loro primo contratto fu firmato dai Theory Of A Deadman.
"Grazie alla loro compagnia di produzione, ci hanno presentato a numerose
major", dice Connolly. "Tra tutte le etichette con cui abbiamo
parlato, la band ha pensato che la migliore fosse la Roadrunner, così abbiamo
firmato per loro". Da allora la 604 è una sottoetichetta della Roadrunner.
La entrò subito nei Greenhouse Studios di Vancouver per registrare il proprio
debutto. Kroeger ha co-prodotto il disco insieme a Joey Moy, che ha
supervisionato le sessioni nel periodo in cui i Nickelback erano in tour.
"Chad è uno dei ragazzi più svegli che conosca", dice Connolly.
"Non devi mai preoccuparti di avere una canzone che difetti di qualcosa,
perché lui colmerà sempre le lacune con una grande armonia o con chissà cosa.
Quando è andato via, abbiamo continuato a registrare e a mandargli le canzoni,
dovunque diavolo fosse. Lui le avrebbe ascoltate e detto 'Sì' o 'No', 'Provate
a fare così' o 'Mi piace, continuate così'.
