Node Connection Points

There are three types of node connection point:

Most operator nodes have one main input. However, the Composite operator node has one main input for each layer, and the Footage node has no inputs at all.

In the process tree, a Footage or operator node cannot be directly connected to a Composite node; it must first be connected to a layer node. When a connection is made from a Footage or operator node to a Composite node, an input list appears. The connection options include New Layer, and any other layers in the composite.

When New Layer is selected from the input list, a layer is created from the node. When another layer is selected from the input list, the Footage or operator node replaces the existing node for that layer.

Whereas the main input for an operator is used for the flow of image data (that is, what the operator works upon), the secondary input is used for additional source material. Some nodes also have one or more secondary inputs, such as the Clone Source input for the Paint operator node. The number of secondary inputs depends on the type of operator.

Most nodes have one output, but the output can be connected to many other nodes. The exception is the output node (used for rendering), which has no output connection points.
