Modes Controls

The Modes controls on the Paint Controls panel change depending on the tool selected on the toolbar or object selected in the viewport.

For example, if you are drawing a selection object, the Combine Mode list shows Replace, Add, Subtract, and Intersect. If you select a rectangular paint object, the Draw Mode list appears where the Combine Mode was.

Use the Modes controls to set an object's opacity, change the draw mode of paint objects, create gradients, and perform revealing and cloning.

Use the Modes controls with selection and mask tools to create opacity for selections and masks, specify how selections and masks are combined, and to feather selections and masks.

For more information on using the Modes controls, see Creating Paint Objects.

Opacity Slider

Use the Opacity slider to control the opacity of objects in the Paint operator. You can also change an object's opacity in the Timeline. The Opacity slider controls the same parameter, but provides easier access to its controls. The opacity parameter, like all parameters in combustion, can be keyframed.

To change an object's opacity:
  1. Select the object using the Arrow tool .
  2. On the Modes controls, click and drag the Opacity slider.

The opacity appears above the center of the slider and the object is updated in the viewport. Set opacity to 100% to make the object completely opaque. Set opacity to 0% to make the object completely transparent.

Modes List

The Modes list changes depending on the tool you pick:

For more information on combining selections, see Adding, Subtracting, and Intersecting Selections.

For more information on combining masks, see Combining Masks.

Pressure Slider

Use the Pressure slider in conjunction with a pen and tablet, or on its own, to set the intensity of selected draw modes.

Use the Pressure slider to alter the pressure or amount of the selected draw mode. This slider is ghosted for draw modes that do not have a variable intensity.

Pressure readings range from 0 to 100. As you move the slider, the current pressure setting is indicated. If you use a graphic tablet, you can use the Freehand tool with the Pressure option enabled to set the pressure depending on how hard you apply the stylus to the tablet.

Feather

Use the Feather slider to feather the edges of selections and masks.

Preserve Alpha

In the Modes controls, enable Preserve Alpha to preserve the transparency of the image. When you draw an object, it respects the transparency of the pixels under it. Use this feature to draw using the background image's alpha channel as a mask.

In the following example, the text is opaque and the black background is transparent. Preserve Alpha is enabled and a filled ellipse object is drawn over the text. The result is the following.

Disabling Preserve Alpha for the filled ellipse object results in the following.

Invert

Enable this option to invert selections or masks.

Anti Alias

Enable this option to create cleaner edges.
