P
iemonte means
“at the foot of the mountains” and it
is really true, since the region is surrounded by 550 kilometres of mountain
chains to the north, west and south.
The great mountain chains include some of the most famous
peaks in Europe:
Argentera, Monviso, Rocciamelone, Gran Paradiso, Monte Rosa.
The mountains are beautiful all year round and Piemonte offers many great
holiday opportunities.
Nevertheless, the winter snow sports are the true focus activity - the recent
decision to hold the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in the region is an additional
acknowledgement of the high quality of the slopes.
