Visit Verona : Scala Family Graves |
||||||
Itinerary > City > Scala family graves > Cangrande > Mastino II > Cansignorio The Scala family has been the ruling family in Verona from 1260 untill the end of the fourteenth century. In the beginning they were loved by the people but soon became violent tyrants, so hungry for power that their lives and histories recall Shakespearian tragedies. Not far from Signori Square you will find their monumental graveyard, considered one of the highest examples of Italian Gothic art.
Scala, the surname of the family, means "ladder", and a ladder was the symbol of the family and it is still the symbol of the town of Verona. You can admire the Scala family graves by booking one of our guided sighseeing tours of Verona. Visit Verona with Verona city guides: |
