Bobbin lace art in
Offida is a typically feminine tradition since the XV century, when it
started to spread among the popular class; then it passed to religious
communities and noble families (XVII century). In particular Benedictine
nuns, in Offida since 1655, spread the taste of lace toward all kind
of people, from noble to poor.
The oldest Offidan laces date from the XVth century and are part of San Giacomo della Marca and San Giovanni da Capistrano vests; they are conserved iby the monks of Monteprandone. Various documents testify a considerable production of lace in Offida through the centuries. Even nowadays, especially in summer, you can see offidan women sitting together out of their doors to work bobbin lace. Traditional techniques, most frequently used, are: Punto Rinascimento, Punto Venezia, Punto Antico. Since 1983 tourists that reach Offida can also admire the monument to lacemakers by Aldo Sergiacomi, a bronze group repersenting a child, an adult and an old woman making bobbin lace. Moreover, a Lace Museum collects several ancient bobbin laces. In its rooms every summer takes place the exhibit of lace works presented to the Fusello d'Oro Lace competition.
