THE LEGEND ABOUT THE ORIGINS OF MOJO

Mojo gets its name from a container used in ancient times to measure grain. The historian Anton Giulio Filoteo D'Amodeo tells the story of a man who used to cheat his blind brother out of his share during their wheat harvest; in punishment he was struck by lighting and both his body and the harvest were turned into a huge pile of ashes and burnt earth which people associate with the small crater of Mojo.

But the name Mojo could be derived from the arabic word "Moiah" which means "clear and abundant waters" as the near Alcantara river.
