Abstract
Newspaper headlines often prove problematic for students. Though small, they are an important part of language and deserve more classroom attention. This article aims to debunk the "art of compression", suggesting a practical way of analysing the stylistic features of newspaper headlines so as to identify various features such as word omissions, tenses, ambiguity and "attention grabbing" aspects. In addition, some challenging and fun activities for students are described.
