Connecting Nodes
In the Schematic view, you can connect nodes in several ways.
When you connect two nodes and the input and output are highlighted, a connection can be made.
To connect nodes:
- Select the red output of a node and drag to the white input, thumbnail, or label of another node. The edge (connection line) follows the cursor.
- Select the white input of a node and drag back to the red output, thumbnail, or label of another node.
- Drag one end of an existing edge away from a connection point (input or output), and drag it to the corresponding connection point of another node. (For example, drag the output of a Footage node to the output of a Paint node.)
Note: When you drag back from a connection (layer) node, be sure to first click on the outline of the node.
Connecting Secondary Nodes
When you connect to a node that allows multiple secondary inputs, the input point displays a list of the secondary inputs for that operator.
For example, a Compound RGB operator has three possible secondary inputs: the red, green, and blue channels. When you connect to the secondary input of a Compound RGB node, the input lists the Red, Green, and Blue channels. For some other nodes, the number of secondary inputs is unlimited, so you can continue adding items to the list.
To connect a node to a secondary input:
- Drag an edge to the secondary input. You can also connect in reverse: drag an edge from the secondary input to the output of another node.
The connection point is highlighted, indicating a connection is possible.
- Release the mouse button.
If a choice needs to be made, the secondary inputs are displayed in a menu.
- Select a secondary input from the list.
The node is connected to the secondary input.
Note: All secondary inputs go to the same connection point, despite the number of secondary inputs available to that operator.
To show or hide secondary connections:Right-click (Windows) or Ctrl-click (Macintosh) in the viewport and choose Display Secondary Connections, or press S.
A check mark beside the menu item indicates the option is on.
Note: You can still make a secondary connection when Display Secondary Connections is disabled; it just disappears after it is created.
