Using the Timeline Views

You can view the composite or another operator in the Timeline in one of two modes: Graph or Overview. Each displays a different view of layers, objects, and keyframes. To display the Timeline in Graph or Overview mode, click the corresponding button in the Timeline controls, or press \.

Graph Mode

Graph mode shows the value of a category's channel over time. Select a channel in the Timeline list to display its graph line. Horizontal position represents time, while vertical position corresponds to the channel's value. If a channel has no keyframes, the line is straight. In Graph mode, you can edit a keyframe's value as well as its position in time. See Editing Keyframes and Animation Curves.

Overview Mode

Overview gives you a "bird's eye" view of the composite. In this view, each layer is represented by a horizontal bar that shows the layer's duration in the composite.

If you expand a layer or object in the Timeline list, each category is represented by a dotted straight line, with white squares indicating category keyframes. Category keyframes represent all the keyframes inside that property category at that particular frame. Category keyframes are useful when you want to move or delete all the keyframes in a category at once. For example, if you want to move all the control point keyframes at frame 10, you can simply move the category keyframe without unfolding the channels and moving each set individually.

Expand a category to see the keyframes for individual properties. In Overview mode, you can edit a keyframe's position in time, but not its value. For more information, see Editing Keyframes and Animation Curves.

To change a layer's in point or out point:

Drag the end of the bar to add or remove frames from the layer's in point or out point.

Note: The dotted lines that extend beyond the layer's in point and out point represent unused available frames in the imported clip.

To move a layer in time:

Drag the center of the bar left or right to move the layer in time.

Current Time Indicator

A vertical line in the Timeline view represents the current time for the composite. Click and drag the indicator to change the current frame displayed in the active viewport.

Note: You can also double-click anywhere in the Timeline view to move the indicator to that position.

Zooming and Scrolling the Timeline View

When you first create a workspace, the Timeline shows the duration specified for that workspace. You can zoom in or out to see the Timeline in more or less detail.

To zoom in or out horizontally:

In the Timeline controls, do one of the following:

To pan the Timeline view:

Position the cursor in the Timeline view, then press Alt (Windows) or Option (Macintosh) while you click and drag the cursor.

In the Timeline Graph view, turn off Auto Scale to scroll vertically and horizontally in the Timeline.
