GIBELLINA, before the earthquake of January 15th, 1968, was a little country with about 6.000 inhabitants, placed in an extreme forgotten periphery of Italy: the Valley ofl Belice. The eye dominated over the vast landscape of the valley: Gibellina, Salaparuta, Poggioreale, Montevago, S. Margherita, Sambuca; all the nights, the lights of other countries and the sea of Selinunte were well seen from there.

The violent tremor of the ground, which buried the country and 115 of its inhabitants under the ruins, took this extreme periphery to the newspapers first pages. After many years of discomforts and difficulties in the hell of the barracks, Gibellina inhabitants moved to a new town, 18 Km far away from the old one. Now the nearest countries are: S. Ninfa, Salemi, Castelvetrano.
