Transport 

Transport is an essential element in sales transactions as it gets the goods to the final consumer. Transport users three main mediums: land, water and air, within which there are various methods of moving people and goods.

The factors need to be choosing the most appropriate means of transport. The most important are:

type of goods, size, weight, quality (valuable, fragile, durable or perishable goods)

urgency

distance

cost

Transport by land

Goods can travel by road or by rail.

Road transport Road transport is the most frequent form of land transport in most countries. Its advantage is flexibility because it offers doors – to – door service and is not subject to a strict timetable. It is usually cheap and fast compared to rail and can reach places which other forms of transport may find inaccessible.

Rail transport are much less important than they used to be, but are still useful for moving bulk freight over long distances. They are also often used to transport urgently required or dangerous items such as nuclear waste.

 

Transport by sea

Sea transport is particularly important for Great Britain where it is still used for about 76 per cent by value of its overseas trade. The advantages are:

competitive price, cost not more expensive

disavantages: it is slow

 

Transport by air

The great advantage of transport by air is its speed, which makes it particularly suitable for urgently needed and non-durable goods. The cost is more expensive.

 

Bill of lading

Bill of lading is a written receipt for goods sent by means of public transportation such as a ship or railroad. A bill of lading is also a contract between the shipper and the carrier. The carrier agrees to deliver the goods under certain conditions in return for a stated fee or rate. When the carrier becomes responsible for a stated fee or rate. When the carrier becomes responsible for the goods, they are said to be consigned to him. The person who ships the goods is called the consignor. The one who receives them after shipment is the consignee. The bill of lading states the names and transportation line or lines over which shipment of the goods is being made. A bill of lading is sometimes called a waybill.

Document of Carriage is the main document used in transport by road/rail is the consignment note or waybill. Functions: receipt for the goods; contract of carriage; it is not negotiable.

 Shipping documents

 When the goods travel by ship, they must be accompanied by these documents:

  1. commercial invoice;

  2. the document relating to payment: bill of exchange;

  3. Insurance policy;

  4. The bill of lading.
