Moans of pleasure? Are they what Iya�s breath transmits to the world when she gets absent? What if it is an imminent death-rattle instead? That is a re-enactment of a transient state of agony? Iya�s colleagues know that it is a temporary absence and then Iya recovers. But she cannot control these �states�, she cannot master them. She might do everything, even to kill, without noticing anything during one of them. And it is what really happens one time when she plays with Pashka. The little boy whom everyone thinks is her son, but who really is the son of Masha, Iya�s good friend with whom she shared the pains of the front.

Iya is fair, bright like a celestial body, she has no secrets, she always tells the truth. Even when the truth is hard to admit. Such as when she confesses to have killed Pashka. Suffocated by a fatal hug.

Does Masha want to heal from war wounds? Is she a veteran? Did she fight? Nothing is known of her. She doesn't know anything about herself,

about her own body, about its potentialities or impairment. When Masha fantasizes about being able to have another son, an �enfant rempla�ant�, it is the hospital doctor who diagnoses her with a hard truth: she can no longer have a baby. It may be Masha already knows that. But denial prevails in her and her Self, in order to recover, has to borrow Iya�s body, its generative potentiality. Also Iya is ill, wounded by war. What is common becomes identical. A symbolic equation. Then the son, who is to be given by Iya to Masha, will belong to both of them. They need each other to couple and procreate. They will make love together, in the

same bed, with the doctor, the male who was chosen to impregnate them. When there is this kind of identity diffusion even sexuality and gender are no longer markers of the Self. Both the Self and the body are

shared. The Self and the Other aren't distinguished in the bodies. Severe trauma can promote a transition of personality towards a contiguous-autistic position (Ogden), in which anxiety <<consists of an unspeakable terror of the dissolution of boundedness resulting in feelings of leaking, falling or dissolving into endless, shapeless space.>> (Ogden, 1989). And then the confusion and the diffusion of identity with the other can offer a point of anchorage in the sinking of the Self. When trauma upsets the depositing in the external world of those parts of Self whom Bleger calls �agglutinated core�, other contexts are required to welcome these ambiguous parts of the subject. But this kind of depositing in the other of the most undifferentiated parts of the Self, if from one side it gives a sense of belonging and of safety, on the other side it happens at the price of an accomodation at any cost (�de s�asapter � n�importe quoi�, says Amati Sas) to the other, whether it is a person or an institution. And this is the case of Iya who accomodates to Masha�s desire of maternity at any cost, pretending to be pregnant and deceiving Masha. It is the same dynamics of �compliance� that made her accept to euthanize a hospital patient by order of the doctor. Her secret about pretended pregnancy can agglutinate identities and assure safety and control of annihilating post-traumatic anxieties. In the glischro-caric position there is no place for the Third. "In the establishment and stabilization of the symbiotic link (immobilization and control of the agglutinated object) self regulation is accomplished basically through communication on a regressive, concrete level where words have the immediate sense of actions. A similar role is played by sexual relations, (...). In these cases, sexual relations have a compulsive character and are a form of acting which stabilizes roles and establishes a control over the distance between the two participants" (Bleger, "Symbiosis and Ambiguity", p.34). In this symbiotic space, oscillating between claustrophobia and agoraphobia that self-esteem cannot be established and Masha, whose self image as a woman has been damaged by her lack of generativity, cannot mirror herself into Iya's female generativity, coming to a colapse of the core Self. It is in the context of this symbiotic link between Iya and Masha that a homo-erotic

episode takes places. The link can be viewed not properly as the beginning of a lesbian relationship, but as a �flash�, an enactment of a fusional need following Masha�s self esteem breakdown. A complementarity in which fusionality results from the meeting of different motivational drives enacted by the two women. Maybe Iya�s maternal love and Masha�s need of care and nurturing that, in glischro-caric position, do not find the attuned language to come into being. In this sense, we can interpret what the film-maker said on the occasion of Cannes press conference, �outbreak of a gratitude�loneliness, love and wish of closeness all in one�.
