Some useful advices for persons who plan to scuba-dive in Italy.

• When to go
  Without a doubt the best time, not only for scuba diving, but in general for a trip in Italy is june and especially september. Also in may, october and in other months of the year you can dive in Italy but the weather could not be so fine and it would be more difficult to find an open Dive Centre. For example, even if many Dive Centres are open all the year, it could be difficult particularly for a single diver to book a dive trip in winter. In july and expecially august there is a tourist invasion so the life of the poor scuba diver could be very difficult: hotel rates go up, trains are extremely crowded and reservetions are a matter of necessity.
  
  
• Where to go
  There is a lot of Islands in Italy with decent and also nice dive sites (see the map below for more details). However the main problem is that, owing to a mad politic of italian divers and fishermen, the marine life has been deeply damaged. So even if you can find a lot of reefs with crystal clear water full of marine stars, beautiful red and yellow sponges and gorgonian corals, it may be very difficult to meet a fish too. Sites with interesting wrecks and archeological finds are also common. If you are so rash to come in Italy in august you must absolutely avoid the small islands, save in the case you have made reservations six months in advance. In my opinion, the only places to go for enjoy a diving adventure in august is Elba Island which is easy to reach and, even if inundated by Germans, is big enough to allow accomodation in campings etc. and has a lot of Dive Centres. Also north Sardegna and Corsica are advisable in this season. Instead if you come in may, june, september or october visit the small islands, especially those near Sicily.
  
  
• Renting the gear
  Renting scuba gear is not expensive in Italy. All Dive Centres offer wet-suits, masks, fins, regulators, tanks, depth gauges etc. for rent and all stuff is reliable and in good conditions. Also computers are in many case at disposal. The tanks are normally in steel with two outlet valve of the type DIN/INT, so you can use directly your personal first stage with either DIN or INT connector. In general a 5 mm wet-suit with hood is recommended, save in winter which requires a dry-suit.
